KRUGER NATIONAL PARK SAFARIS
The Kruger National Park is one of South Africa’s top game reserves,
offering tourists an experience of African wildlife second to none.
The sprawling game reserve, which covers nearly two million hectares
across the South African Lowveld, was initially established in 1898
to protect the wildlife that inhabited the region. Today, the Kruger
Park is South Africa’s foremost game reserve, an impressive
ecosystem that’s home to hundreds of different species of trees,
fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The expansive
national park proudly boasts South Africa’s “Big Five” animals,
namely the lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. These
majestic creatures are the main attraction at the Kruger Park,
drawing visitors from all corners of the globe.
Kruger National Park regions
The Kruger Park is comprised of four main areas, namely the far
north region, the northern region, the central region and the
southern region. With the exception of the rhinoceros, all of the
Big Five can be spotted in the far north region, which is situated
in close proximity to the Limpopo River. Several types of buck,
including the nyala, sable antelope and eland abound in this area.
South Africa wildlife safaris also travel to the northern part of
the park, which is rich in pre-historic relics and stretches towards
the Olifants River. The region offers excellent opportunities for
viewing elephants, zebras and buffalo and, while predators prefer to
keep a low profile in the northern area, one can still catch a
glimpse of them every now and then.
For your best chance of viewing the widest variety of the Kruger
Park’s animal contingent, head to the central region of the
Kruger
National Park. This area snakes from the Olifants River in the north
to the Sabi River in the south, and is certainly the most game-rich
part of the reserve. The site is teeming with ferocious predators
such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. These fierce creatures prowl
the vast grassland plains, competing with each other for the best
kill amongst the countless zebra, giraffe and wildebeest herds
roaming the area. Packs of wild dogs, as well as sable antelope,
eland, buffalo and rhino can be found in the south-west corner of
the central region.
Finally, the southern region of the park is a popular stop for South
Africa wildlife safaris, as it is renowned for the impressive number
of lions that dwell there. The
southern region, situated between the Sabi and Crocodile Rivers, not only boasts several prides of big
cats, but also has the largest rhino population. Although densely
vegetated, the region offers tourists the best chance of viewing
black or white rhinos.
Include game drives in your Kruger National Park Safaris!
The Kruger National Park offers morning, sunset and late night game
drives through its plains, all of which are conducted by
experienced, accredited Parks Board Guides. Early morning or dawn
drives set out before the sun rises, while sunset drives get
underway late in the afternoon. Night-time drives are offered by a
few select camps, and guides attempt to locate the elusive nocturnal
creatures that venture out of their homes only once the sun has set.
Game drives transport visitors through the areas of the park that
are abundant with wildlife, both predator and prey. Experience the
wilderness at close quarters as you venture on a game drive through
the vast expanses of the Kruger National Park. For a truly African
adventure, book one of our South Africa wildlife safaris today! |
